A business email with your domain is one of the highest-trust upgrades you can make. The address looks like you@yourdomain.com instead of a personal inbox, and it keeps your brand portable as the business grows.
The main choice is whether you need forwarding only or a real mailbox that can send and receive from the domain. Forwarding is cheaper. A real mailbox is cleaner for daily operations and automation.
Forwarding is fine for early validation
If you only need incoming messages to info@yourdomain.com or hello@yourdomain.com, email forwarding can be enough. Cloudflare Email Routing is a strong free option if your domain uses Cloudflare DNS.
Forwarding is less ideal if you need multiple employees, shared mailboxes, clean sending from the domain, calendar invites, advanced search, or AI workflow automation.
A real mailbox is better for operations
A custom-domain mailbox gives you sending, receiving, aliases, admin controls, and authentication records in one system. Google Workspace is usually the best automation ecosystem; Zoho Mail is often the best low-cost starting point.
If privacy is a major buying criterion, Proton Mail for Business is worth comparing, but custom domains require a paid plan.
DNS records to configure
At minimum, you will configure MX records so mail knows where to go. For sending, configure SPF and DKIM. Add DMARC once you are ready to monitor and enforce your domain's email policy.
Do the DNS setup slowly and copy values exactly. A missing period, wrong host field, or duplicate record can cause hours of confusion.
